SGI-Palau is a non profit organization based on the teachings and practice of the 13th Century Nichiren Buddhism. With its affiliation with Soka Gakkai International and with its 3rd SGI President Daisaku Ikeda, SGI-Palau is part of the global grass root organizations that seeks to promote values of peace and respect for all people. Its central philosophy is based on altruistic practice which recognizes each individual’s unique capabilities and potentials to transform their challenges to positive transformations term as their “human revolution” where each individual is able to recognize and reveal their greatest inner strengths and uniqueness leading to their own productive life as well as enacting outlook as “global citizens” in their community. Thus, individual dignity is inherent to lasting peace in respect to one’s interrelationship with one’s community, environment as well as to our planet.
Formal gathering of SGI-Palau members began on November 18th, 2001 and was later chartered and registered on August 4th, 2003. Historically, few SGI Palauan members began practicing Nichiren Daishonin Buddhism on their own early in the 1970’s due to Palau’s close historical relationship with Japan. Til about thirty years later the organization was finally formally organized.
SGI-Palau based on its principles of non violence recognizes the colourful and interdependent diversity of our humanity irrespective of race, gender, religion, social status or background connecting our “self” and “environment” and the human family. Through each individuals “human revolution” based on the humanistic philosophy of Nichiren Daishonin Buddhism it aims to ensure and protect the common spirit of humanity by leading efforts and action for social awareness to break barriers and walls of violence, intolerance, inequality, wars, destruction, oppression and the destructive annihilation to life. As practitioners of Nichiren Daishonin Buddhism its goals to build lasting peace in the 21st Century is a fundamental and a solid way of life for lasting happiness. The aim for true peace is not particular to any group but is an inherent natural hope and desire for all People and every generation. As such, SGI-Palau and its affiliation with Soka Gakkai International pursues to endeavour its “humanist spirit” on taking proactive action to make its positive contribution as individuals and as an organization to establish a community of harmony stemming from the sense of responsibility as “global citizens” to our planet that starts at the grass root level which sets the stage for making peace attainable and a reality of hope for the 21st Century and for every generation to come.
